One of my favourite hammocking spots
Our jungle camp for one of the nights
As the nights become longer & the weather becomes colder it is the perfect season to explore other parts of the world, specifically one of my favourite places to hammock…the Amazon. As you will know the Amazon jungle is one of the most diverse environments in the world with nature bursting from the forest floor to the tree tops.
We explored the jungle on a 10 day self-sufficient hammocking journey into the depths of the Guyanese Amazon using the natural arteries to travel…AKA the river! Taking the bare minimum & eating the fish we caught was a fabulous way to adventure; although a little pressure to catch fish, otherwise we would go hungry! We line caught Catfish, Piranha and saw 1m long electric eels but didn’t catch them.

The nights were full of amazing sounds; from the bellowing sound of the howling monkeys from kilometres away to the chorus of crickets. The jungle is a tough place to travel through & exist, but with the right knowledge, skills & equipment it is a place to be enjoyed. We have been hammocking in the jungle many times before but we improved our jungle hammocking skills significantly on this trip. Our guide was the person who taught the participants on the “naked & afraid” tv show before they went into the jungle to survive 21 days.
We learnt how to create a shelter from palm leaves, catch fish by bow & arrow, by line & by trap. The jungle is wonderful place to enjoy & the original birthplace of the hammock. I recommend anyone to venture into the depths of the luscious green jungle!
