Hammocking 101
So you’re intrigued by the idea of relaxing in a hammock…
Like all outdoor activities there are a few things you need to think about before embarking on an adventure, no matter how small or big!
So in this short read I’ll try to explain what you need to get you started. I’ll caveat this blog with the assumption that you are hammocking in a temperate climate in the summer season. If you are in the jungle or in the arctic in the middle of winter then you will need different kit! That’s for another blog!
So firstly you will need to find a hammock! There are so many options out there from very cheap to very expensive. If you are just starting out, it doesn’t really matter, all I suggest is you look for a hammock made from parachute material (nylon) and it has a hook or carabiner attachment at each end (easier to attach). Other than that you are good to go.
Secondly you will need to keep dry! So you will need to buy a tarpaulin to cover the hammock/s and a ridge line (paracord or climbing rope works well). You can get specific hammock tarpaulins but really anything that covers your hammock and has at least 4 guy ropes will work!
Thirdly you will need to keep warm! There are lots of discussions online about different ways to keep warm, but take it from me, there is only one way that really cuts it! You will need a sleeping bag (rated for the temperature you will find yourself in) and a hammock underblanket. An underblanket is necessary if you are sleeping anywhere except the jungle, trust me!
That’s it folks! That is all you need to have a hammocking adventure! Well, that and trees of course. But that’s for another time!
